Plus since our basement gets wet frequently, we wanted to know how to keep up with the basement mold removal or go broke hiring a professional to come in every time we spotted any mold.
Basement Mold Removal - Diagnosing the Problem
Failing Gutters, broken or leaking pipes and seepage are the most common causes of basement moister and mold. To prevent mold damage to walls and floors you need to identify the source of the moisture and made appropriate repairs.
Condensation usually occurs in the summer months. It often results from a poorly vented clothes dryer. Check and adjust the dryer vent connection, or install a dehumidifier to eliminate condensation.
Ninety-five percent of all wet basement problems occur because water pools near the foundation. Wet basements can usually be traced to roof gutters and down spouts that are plugged, rusted through, or not diverted away from the house. To prevent problems, repair gutters, and downspouts and position them to channel away from the foundation. After adjusting the downspouts and gutters, check the soil grade around the house. If necessary, regrade the soil so that it slopes away from the foundation.
Removing Basement Mold
Removing basement mold is crucial on many levels. As mentioned earlier your homes main duct work begins in the basement. As the fans on your heating and cooling systems blow so does the mold blow throughout your whole house. Think of these mold spores blowing up from your duct work and being breathed by everyone in the house. Also as the mold settles on the floors babies and pets have their faces right in the mold. This could set off a series of allergies and toxic mold illnesses.
Removing mold from dark damp basements means they need to be dried out as much as possible and a light source needs to be brought in. First basement mold removal begins with removing mold and then keeping the mold causes limited. Ventilation, light and dryness are all musts in keeping the need for mold removal down to a minimum.
Creating a waterproof seal over areas where water is seepage has occurred through minor cracks and holes controls minor seepage. The best method for sealing surfaces depends on the size of the openings and the frequency of moisture. In basements where seepage is an occasional problem, sealing openings and coating the walls with a masonry sealer and paint is usually sufficient. If seepage is frequent, seal the openings, then resurface the walls with a concrete coating. If seepage continues, install a baseboard gutter and drain system to manage the problem.
