Bat Removal: How to Get Rid of Bats
64Bat removal from the house is our primary objective here. How to get rid of bats from our third floor attic is the biggest question. We have bats living in our third floor attic. This may sound disgusting to many but it isn't all that uncommon in the country. To get processional bat pest control or pest exterminators involved would mean the killing of these bats and that is not exactly what we would like to do. Bat elimination from our house is more like it.
We knew we had bats in the attic but we did not know we had a large bat infestation. Our neighbors were kind enough to inform us about the bat infestation they witnessed as they sat on there deck one evening. They saw a bunch of bats flying out of the eves up on the third floor attic area and informed us.
Bat Removal: How to Get Rid of Bats
We are planning on doing the bat removal ourselves. Our first step is to study up on how to remove bats safely from our attic without injury to ourselves or to the bats themselves. We rather appreciate having the bats around our home to control all the pests that would other wise be driving us crazy. They have become our natural pest control.
As much as we appreciate having the bats occupy our outer living space we are not so appreciative about the bats living in our house. Three times this year the bats have flown into our living space. We were able to get the bats to fly back out for two of them, but we did end up killing one. Not something we wanted to do.
We have pinpointed the exact spot where the bats were seen leaving. The opening in the dormer is not very large, but obviously large enough for the bats to get in and out. But before we can plug the opening we have to make sure the bats are out of the attic.
According to everything that we have read, the bats leave the area right after dark. This is the best time to go up and seal the opening. Well this is in a dormer that is very high up and would require climbing a very tall ladder in the dark with no light. Not sure how we would accomplish this.
Another antidote was to lay fiberglass insulation in the attic. The bats sensitive skin becomes very irritated by the fiberglass and they will leave the area to nest else where. Our attic space already occupies large tubes from our solar heating and blown-in insulation. the only way to get through this attic area is by crawling and with the bats up there I don't think any one would be willing to attempt being trapped by a bunch of bats.
Adding a light has been recommended to chase the bats away as they do not like light. That's why they are out at night. This one may be doable.
Removing Bats in the Attic
Bat Removal
We have decided to try to remove the bats ourselves by removing the attic vent in that area and installing a large trouble light. We can clip the light on one of the roof rafters. Hopefully the bats will leave. Once the bats are out we can then plug the hole in the dormer and place screening behind the attic vent.
Not sure if this is going to do the trick but we will find out and report back.
Getting Rid of Bats Now
This is the first part of August here and bats have their pups in the fall. If we plug the hole with pups inside they will die and stink. Not pleasant! The ideal time to remove the bats from your house is in the spring but we did not realize that we had this infestation until recently. So now we are under the gun to get rid of the bats and NOW!

Ehhh, i never believed in the vampire bat junk. It is a myth propogated by hollywood and now romanticized in the Twilight craze. Bats are just one nature's mysterious creatures, although less mysterious now thanks to your fins research and presentation. Nice job K9!
I love bats, why they freak some people out I really don't understand. I often go to a wonderful place on the side of a volcano in the Philippines where I can laze in the hot springs and watch the bats in the trees above!
If you live in Michigan and have bats living in the attic, them getting rid of bats is a time sensitive matter. Try looking into a "live bat exclusion".
Boomer If you find a way please let me kmow ! Our massive attic is out of bounds to us cause of the bats.best from jandee.
Did the light trick work? If not what did? What did you use to disinfect the histoplasmosis and other diseases left from the bat guano?

Your bright light is a common idea - that unfortunately doesn't work. Exclusion (one way doors) is the only effective and humane approach. I've written a book "The Home Owner's Essential Guide to Bat Removal", available on my website: http://GetBatsOut.com to show you how to do this work safely.
