Welsh toy company Mettoy, founded in the 1930s, released Corgi Toys in 1956 as a competitor to Dinky's highly successful range of model vehicles. As well as having realistic glazed windows ( leading to the slogan 'The Ones With The Windows'), from 1959 they often had extra features such as opening doors and hoods, suspension and 'jeweled' headlights - exciting features for young boys.

Collectible Corgi Toys

Corgi are very well known for their large range of models produced during the 1960s and 1970s to tie-in with popular TV shows and films. These models were highly popular at the time and stole the lead from Dinky. They continued to be popular with fans of the series or film as well as with Corgi collectors today., which can lead to higher values due to increased competition, especially for some of the Bond cars.

Vintage Corgi Toys

Vintage Corgi toys as well as other die-cast models, condition and unusual variations are key indicators to value. Collectors grade examples from 'poor' through 'good' and 'very good' to 'excellent' and 'mint', with the top prices being paid for mint condition examples. Original boxes add a substantial amount to the value and the condition of the box is also important.

Unusual variations produced in small numbers or for short periods of time can also fetch high values and can add excitement to collecting and diversity to a collection. Look out for nonstandard colors, different wheels, transfers or decoration that are unusual and consult a reference book to learn how to spot them.
